‘Tycho and Copernicus’ Captured With DMK 21AF04

Two images by Mike Salway, based in Australia have been published at LPOD lunar photo of the day.

Chuck Wood, the maintainer of LPOD, writes:

Craters have a family resemblance, but their relationship is based on physics not blood. The impact process is a complex balance of forces, with the energy of impact working against the force of gravity and the bond strength of rocks. For craters with diameters larger than about 30 km the tremendous kinetic energy of impact largely overwhelms variations due to target characteristics, and large craters look pretty much alike.

Mike captured these images with The Imaging Source DMK 21AF04:

Solar System Bodies With Diameter Larger Than 320 km

Over at Kokogiak, Alan Taylor has published a very impressive mosaic image. It shows all known bodies in the Solar System whose diameter is larger than 320 km (500 miles).

He writes:

It’s just one of those things I’ve been itching to make for a long while, frankly because I wanted to see it - a visual listing of objects in the Solar System, ordered by size.
[...]
The larger planets and Sun just bleed off the page, but still give a sense of scale by the visible curve of their limbs.

Alan has published two versions: One in metric measurements; the other in imperial:
